White Flies on Plants: Treatment and Control Guide

Last updated: June 2026 | By Joemar Villalobos

Tiny white flies scattering when you touch your plants? Learn how to treat whitefly infestations with proven natural methods that work in tropical gardens.

White flies on plants require treatment as soon as you notice them because these tiny pests multiply rapidly in warm weather. Whiteflies are one of the most common pests affecting eggplant, tomatoes, sili peppers and ornamental plants in the Philippines. They gather on leaf undersides in large numbers, sucking sap and producing sticky honeydew that leads to sooty mould. A cloud of tiny white insects flying up when you disturb your plants is the classic sign of a whitefly infestation that needs immediate attention.

How to Identify Whiteflies

Whiteflies are tiny moth-like insects about 1.5 millimetres long with white powdery wings. They cluster on the undersides of leaves and scatter in a white cloud when disturbed. Look for these signs:

  • Tiny white flying insects that scatter when you shake the plant or touch the leaves
  • Sticky honeydew coating leaves and dripping onto lower foliage and surfaces
  • Yellow, wilting leaves especially on lower parts of the plant
  • Black sooty mould growing on honeydew-coated surfaces
  • Tiny oval eggs and flat scale-like nymphs on leaf undersides

Whitefly nymphs look like tiny flat discs on leaf undersides. They do not move and are often mistaken for scale insects. Gently flip a leaf and tap it over a white piece of paper. If tiny white insects fall off, you have whiteflies.

Why Whiteflies Attack Your Plants

Whiteflies thrive in the Philippine climate because warm temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius speed up their breeding cycle. Over-fertilising with nitrogen creates the soft, sap-rich growth they prefer. Plants grown indoors or in sheltered areas with poor air circulation are more vulnerable. Whiteflies often arrive on new plants brought from nurseries. Once established, a single female can lay 200 to 400 eggs, leading to explosive population growth. Dusty leaves attract whiteflies because dust inhibits the plant's natural defences.

How to Treat White Flies Naturally

1. Yellow Sticky Traps

Place yellow sticky traps near infested plants at leaf height. Whiteflies are strongly attracted to yellow and get permanently stuck. This reduces the breeding adult population significantly. Use at least one trap per plant. Replace every 1 to 2 weeks. Cheap and available from Shopee, Lazada and garden supply shops across the Philippines.

2. Neem Oil Spray

Mix 2 tablespoons of cold-pressed neem oil with 1 teaspoon of liquid soap in 1 litre of water. Spray all plant surfaces thoroughly, focusing on leaf undersides where whiteflies feed and lay eggs. Neem disrupts their feeding and reproduction. Spray every 5 to 7 days for 3 to 4 weeks to break the entire life cycle.

3. Insecticidal Soap

Mix 1 tablespoon of pure castile soap in 1 litre of water and spray directly onto whitefly clusters. The soap dissolves their protective coating. Only works on contact, so thorough coverage of leaf undersides is essential. Repeat every 3 to 5 days. Safe for all edible crops when rinsed before harvest.

4. Reflective Mulch

Place aluminium foil or reflective plastic mulch around the base of plants. The reflected light confuses whiteflies and deters them from landing. This is especially effective for vegetable gardens. Combine with sticky traps and neem oil for comprehensive control.

5. Vacuum Adults

Use a small handheld vacuum to suck up adult whiteflies in the early morning when they are sluggish. Hold the nozzle near the plant and gently shake leaves to dislodge the flies. Empty the vacuum bag into soapy water immediately. This provides instant population reduction for severe infestations.

Healthy Soil Grows Stronger Plants

Plants in quality soil develop stronger natural defences against whiteflies. Start with premium loam soil.

Chemical Treatment Options

When natural methods cannot control a severe whitefly infestation after 3 weeks, targeted chemical treatment may be needed. Pyrethrin-based sprays provide fast knockdown of adult whiteflies and are approved for vegetable gardens. Insecticidal oils like horticultural oil suffocate all life stages including eggs and nymphs. For ornamental plants only, systemic insecticides provide long-lasting control but must never be used on edible crops. Apply any chemical treatment in the morning or evening when pollinators are less active. Rotate between different products to prevent whitefly resistance.

How to Prevent Whiteflies

  • Inspect new plants by shaking them gently before buying. If white flies emerge, do not purchase.
  • Keep leaves clean by washing with a gentle spray of water to remove dust and eggs
  • Use balanced fertiliser with proper NPK ratios to avoid excess nitrogen
  • Maintain good spacing between plants for air circulation
  • Plant marigolds and nasturtiums as trap crops that attract whiteflies away from vegetables
  • Apply preventive neem spray every 14 days during warm, dry months

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes white flies on plants?

Whiteflies are attracted to plants with soft, nitrogen-rich growth, which is why over-fertilised plants often get the worst infestations. Warm temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius accelerate their breeding cycle, making tropical climates like the Philippines ideal for year-round populations. Poor air circulation, overcrowded planting and dusty leaves all contribute to whitefly problems. They often arrive on new plants from nurseries or garden centres. Once established, whiteflies spread quickly because each female can lay 200 to 400 eggs on leaf undersides over her lifetime.

Do yellow sticky traps work for whiteflies?

Yellow sticky traps are very effective for monitoring and reducing adult whitefly populations. Whiteflies are strongly attracted to the colour yellow and get permanently stuck on the adhesive surface. Place traps near affected plants at canopy height for best results. However, sticky traps alone will not eliminate an infestation because they only catch flying adults while eggs and nymphs remain on the leaves. Use sticky traps alongside neem oil spray for complete control. Replace traps every 1 to 2 weeks or when they become covered with insects.

How long does it take to get rid of whiteflies?

Eliminating a whitefly infestation typically takes 3 to 4 weeks of consistent treatment. The whitefly life cycle from egg to adult takes about 25 days in warm conditions. You need to treat for at least one full life cycle to catch all stages. Spray neem oil every 5 to 7 days and maintain yellow sticky traps throughout the treatment period. You should see a significant reduction in flying adults within the first week. Continue treatment for 2 weeks after the last whitefly sighting to ensure all eggs and nymphs have been eliminated.
