Vermicast (Worm Castings)

Vermicast, also called worm castings, worm humus, or worm manure, is the organic material produced when earthworms digest decomposing plant matter, kitchen scraps, and other organic waste. As the material passes through the worm's digestive system, it is broken down into a fine, dark, crumbly substance packed with nutrients and beneficial microorganisms.

Unlike regular compost (which is broken down by bacteria and fungi), vermicast goes through a biological refining process inside the worm. This makes it significantly more concentrated and nutrient-dense than any other organic amendment you can buy.

• ✓ For new plantings: Mix 1 part vermicast with 3 parts loam soil (25:75 ratio). Fill your pots or garden beds with this mix and plant directly. This provides 3-6 months of sustained nutrition.
• ✓ For existing potted plants: Sprinkle 100-200 grams (1-2 handfuls) of vermicast on top of the soil surface around the base of the plant. Water thoroughly to activate the microorganisms.
• ✓ For garden beds and raised beds: Spread 1 kilo of vermicast per square meter over the soil surface. Gently rake it into the top 5-10 cm of soil. Water well after application.
• ✓ For seedlings and transplants: Add a tablespoon of vermicast into each planting hole before placing the seedling. This gives young plants an immediate boost of beneficial microbes and gentle nutrition.
• ✓ For heavy-feeding vegetables: Tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, and squash benefit from monthly applications during their fruiting stage. Apply 200-300 grams per plant as a side dressing and water in.
