What is Carabao Grass?
Paspalum conjugatum — the Filipino lawn staple
Carabao grass, scientifically known as Paspalum conjugatum and commonly called carpet grass, is the most widely used lawn grass in the Philippines. You'll find it in residential yards, public parks, road medians, school grounds, and commercial landscapes across the country. Its popularity comes down to one thing: it works reliably in Philippine conditions without demanding much from the homeowner.
This tropical grass is a low-growing, creeping species that spreads aggressively through stolons — horizontal stems that run along the soil surface and root at every node. Over time, it forms a dense, carpet-like mat that chokes out weeds and covers bare ground effectively. The leaf blades are medium-wide with a bright green color that stays consistent throughout the year when watered regularly.
Carabao grass thrives in the Philippine tropical climate. It tolerates the intense summer heat, handles the humidity of the wet season, and can survive moderate drought periods without dying off completely. It grows best in full sun but can handle partial shade, making it versatile enough for most yard configurations. Unlike premium grass varieties that demand regular fertilization and precise watering schedules, carabao grass is forgiving — it grows well even in poor or compacted soil conditions.
One of the key reasons carabao grass dominates the Philippine lawn market is its affordability. Compared to frog grass or bermuda grass, carabao grass costs significantly less per square meter, making it the practical choice for homeowners covering large areas. It can handle moderate foot traffic, which makes it suitable for yards where children play or where you walk regularly. For Filipino homeowners and landscapers looking for an affordable, low-maintenance grass that establishes quickly and looks good year-round, carabao grass remains the top choice.

How to Install Carabao Grass
Step-by-step guide for a healthy lawn
Step 1: Clear the Area
Remove all existing weeds, rocks, debris, and old grass from the area. If the ground has thick weed growth, consider scraping the top layer or applying a non-selective herbicide at least one week before installation. A clean surface ensures your new carabao grass won't compete with weeds for nutrients and sunlight.
Step 2: Level and Prepare the Soil
Grade the soil so it slopes slightly away from your house or building for proper drainage. Fill in low spots and remove high points. If the existing soil is very hard or clay-heavy, add a thin layer of topsoil or loam soil (2-3 inches) to give the grass roots a better medium to grow into. Rake the surface smooth before laying the sod.
Step 3: Lay the Grass Sod
Place the carabao grass sod pieces tightly together on the prepared soil, staggering the joints like a brick pattern. Push the edges firmly against each other so there are no gaps. Work from one end to the other in straight rows. Cut pieces to fit around curves, garden beds, and pathways using a sharp knife or spade.
Step 4: Press and Water Thoroughly
After laying, press each piece firmly with your feet or a lawn roller to ensure good soil contact. This eliminates air pockets between the sod and the soil underneath. Immediately water the entire area thoroughly — the soil beneath the sod should be soaked to a depth of at least 2-3 inches. Watering right after installation is critical.
Step 5: First Two Weeks of Care
Water the grass once or twice daily for the first two weeks, ideally in the early morning. The goal is to keep the soil consistently moist so the roots can establish. Avoid walking on the grass or placing heavy objects on it during this period. You'll know the grass is rooting when you can no longer lift a corner of the sod easily.
Step 6: Ongoing Maintenance
Once established, mow your carabao grass every 2 to 3 weeks to maintain a height of 3-5 centimeters. Water during extended dry spells in summer, and let natural rainfall handle irrigation during the wet season. Apply a balanced fertilizer (14-14-14) once every 2-3 months for a thicker, greener lawn. Pull weeds manually as they appear.
Carabao Grass vs Other Grasses
How it compares to popular alternatives
Carabao Grass vs Frog Grass
Carabao grass is cheaper per square meter and tougher in direct sunlight, making it the better choice for large open areas. Frog grass (Philippine grass) has softer, finer blades and better shade tolerance, so it's preferred for shaded gardens and areas where you want a softer feel underfoot. For budget-conscious homeowners with sun-exposed yards, carabao grass wins.
Carabao Grass vs Blue Grass
Carabao grass is more affordable and requires less maintenance than blue grass. Blue grass offers a finer texture and a more premium, manicured appearance, which is why it's popular for high-end residential landscapes and commercial properties. If you want a functional lawn without the upkeep, carabao grass is the practical pick.
Carabao Grass vs Bermuda Grass
Carabao grass needs less frequent mowing and less fertilizer than bermuda grass. Bermuda grass handles heavy foot traffic better and recovers faster from damage, which is why sports fields prefer it. For a typical residential lawn in the Philippines where low maintenance matters more than heavy-duty durability, carabao grass is the smarter choice.
